With the exhibition PickPaintings at HENNINGSEN gallery, Christoffer Munch Andersen has created a series of paintings shaped like oversized guitar picks.

The exhibition consists of seven large guitar picks. The pieces are hung on the gallery walls giving a visual impression of being ‘knightly shields of the music culture’ with their various logos and designs. Like the painter’s brush the pick is the guitarists ultimate tool to set the tone in his harmonies. For Christoffer Munch Andersen it is the visual harmonies that are explored.

ILLUSION
It is characteristic for Christoffer Munch Andersen to work with both illusion and abstraction at the same time. The pieces in PickPaintings are sheets of shaped MDF with an illusionary coat of paint. They occur as if they were made of plastic, and exists in the intersection between painting and object. There is a black pick, a yellow pick, a pink pick, and a pearl marble pick. One is so worn down that is it almost impossible to read the original logo. Another shines like it has never been used.

FORM, TEXTURE, TRANSPARENCY
As a result of the serial seven pieces the visual and aesthetic qualities clearly emerges. The pick is the continuous motif, and brings the painterly and sculpturally differences from piece to piece in focus. Even the smallest differences transpire in the up-scaled pieces: subtle shifts in nuance, variation in form, imitated wear and tear and surface phenomena like shine, faintness and transparency.
Christoffer Munch Andersens up-scaled, isolated motifs of cultural products forces the viewer to understand and see the subject in a new powerful visual context. The exhibition is Christoffer Munch Andersens second solo show with the gallery.
